Saranac's Gillette named Wrestler of the Year

PLATTSBURGH — Saranac’s Codie Gillette, a three-time Section VII champion and a fifth-place finisher at the NYSPHSAA Division II Championships this season, has been chosen as the Wrestler of the Year on the 2013-14 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Wrestling All-Star Team.

Gillette, who recorded a 43-2 record this season and finished with a 154-38 mark for his career, helped the Chiefs win both the CVAC and Section VII championships this season. Gillette was selected as a first team all-star at 145 pounds and won the sectional title this year at 138.

Gillette is joined on the first team by teammates Jacob Nolan (99 pounds) and Paul Herrera (220). Nolan finished fifth at the states at 99.

League and sectional runner-up Peru led the way with five wrestlers in the first team, including Brandon Goddeau (106), Colin Hogan (113), Ethan Feazelle (126), Tanner Phillips (160) and Jordan Bushey (170), who finished fifth at the states at 160. Bushey is also a three-time sectional champion.

Also selected on the first unit are Beekmantown’s Jon Graziane (132), Eathan Bacon (138) and Brandon Defayette (195), Northern Adirondack’s Collin LaBombard (152) and Matt Lashway (182), and AuSable Valley’s Dylan Baker (120) and Kenny Rivers (285).

Among this year’s sectional champions on the first team include Nolan, Hogan, Baker, Gillette, Phillips, Bushey, Lashway, Defayette, Herrera and Rivers.

Graziane, who lost just once all season, wrestled injured at the Section VII Championships and the senior was chosen as the Sportsman of the Year by the wrestling officials and also for the Champion of Champion Award, which was voted on by the sectional finalists from each school.

Saranac’s Heath Smith and Sean Nolan won the Coach of the Year award as voted on by their peers.

Leading the way on the second team were five sectional champions — Saranac’s John Devins at 106, Saranac’s Rafeal Rivera at 126, Northern Adirondack’s Austin Trombley at 132, Peru’s Jay Oakes at 145, and Saranac’s Colby Staley at 170.

Oakes finished fifth at the state this season at 145.

Rounding out the all-CVAC second unit are Saranac’s Brandon Yip (113), Shawn LaGrave (120), Will Marcil (152), James Black (160), Cody Plumadore (195) and Tony Bushey (285), along with Peru’s Carson Dobozy (99), Northern Adirondack’s Chad King (138), and Beekmantown’s Dylan Peryea (170) and Bruce Goddeau (220).

AuSable Valley was selected as the Ray Holmes Sportsmanship Award winner, as chosen by the league wrestling officials.

Wrestling Official of the Year, as selected by the wrestling coaches, went to Billy Joe Manor.
