Spear's goal sends Peru past NCCS

PERU — Sam Spear connected on a difficult shot with just over a minute left in regulation to lift Peru to a 4-3 win over Northeastern Clinton in a back-and-forth girls’ Northern Soccer League game Wednesday.

“Both teams played their hearts out,” Peru coach Tom Harrigan said.

Lindsey Bushey had three goals for the Indians, and Brittany Minor made 10 saves to preserve the victory.

Bushey scored from 25 yards out to give Peru an early lead, but Katie Matott tied it up at 17:15. Then Bushey tallied her second to send the Indians into halftime leading 2-1.

Harrigan said the Cougars started to put more pressure on Minor in the second half, and it was effective. Just over nine minutes in, Michaela McDonough headed Chelsey Menard’s corner kick into the net. Northeastern Clinton took its only lead of the game at 18:49 when Shaylyn Rowe scored on a corner kick.

“I switched some girls around, just trying to find the best fit for the team, and it seemed to definitely give us a lift,” Cougars coach Tim Surprenant said. “That’s something that we can hopefully build upon.”

The Indians picked up their play after falling behind, and Bushey knotted the score at 3-3 on an assist from Spear with 8:05 left in regulation.

The game was in danger of needing extra sessions until Spear got the go-ahead with 1:01 on the clock.

“Both teams had great chances with a couple of minutes left until Sam Spear received a pass from Kaylee Rock and shot from the right side with almost an impossible angle,” Harrigan said. “Exciting game for both teams.”

Christina Paola made eight saves in a losing effort. Menard finished with two assists.

“The Bushey girl gave us an extremely hard time, and they capitalized on their opportunities,” Surprenant said. “I’m proud of the effort that we gave, and we’ll catch some breaks and start winning some close games instead of losing them.”
