Hornets upset Northeastern Clinton in boys' basketball

PLATTSBURGH — Though Plattsburgh High School boys’ basketball team has struggled at times against some of the top teams in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference, the second-best team record-wise, Northeastern Clinton, hasn’t posed a threat.

The Hornets showed why with a 69-42 upset of Cougars at home Tuesday evening.

Despite a huge 24-point second quarter, it was the Hornet defense, not offense that made a difference in the game.

“We showed our potential,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Hartmann said. “It was a great team win that started with team defense.”

The Hornets held the Cougars to 10 points in the first quarter before allowing 17 in the second, though they took the lead with their 24 points. In the third quarter, Plattsburgh shut the usually potent NCCS offense down, allowing just eight points. By the time the Cougars finished putting up 17 in the fourth, it was too late.

The at times stifling defense was coupled with what Hartmann called “team basketball.” The Hornets finished the game with 19 total assists.

Taoufik Maknani led the way with 15 points apiece, and T.J. LaPoint followed with 12. Overall, 11 of the 14 Hornets who played scored at least two points.

Tom Bedard paced the Cougars with 13 points. Rodney Grimshaw, a catalyst for the NCCS offense since his first game of the season Jan. 3 who Hartmann said was shutdown for most of the game, and Harley Tavernia each scored 10 points.

WELLS 47, JOHNSBURG 23

WELLS — The Indians scored early and often as they pulled away from the Jaguars early and didn’t look back.

Jake Earley scored a game-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds and Ben Brenan contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds for Wells, which held Johnsburg to less than 10 points in each quarter.

“They stuck with us for a while there, but we got some key baskets,” Wells coach Dayna Fisher said. “We jumped out quick then slowed down after that. Then we got some quick baskets in the fourth, which pretty much sealed it up for us.”

Caleb Hayes added seven assists in what Fisher called a “good, controlled game at point guard.”

Austin Washburn paced the Jaguars with eight points.
