Hebert ninth in hurdles at national meet

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Three local athletes competed in this weekend’s New Balance Nationals Outdoor track and field meet at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.

Ticonderoga’s Jay Hebert was on hand to run the 110-meter hurdles. The junior finished second in his preliminary heat, but his time of 14.35 seconds was a few tenths shy of landing him in the finals. Hebert was ninth overall, and the top eight advanced. The fastest qualifying time for the event was 13.95.

Hebert’s personal best time in the 110 hurdles is 14.04, which he ran in a federation race at the NYSPHSAA Championships last week.

Seton Catholic distance runner Mitchell Ryan ran the 2000 steeplechase and finished with a time of 6:25.15, which was good for 23rd place out of 38 runners. The winning time for the steeplechase in Greensboro was 5:49.24.

Ryan, a senior, entered the weekend coming off of a fourth place finish in last week’s NYSPHSAA 3000 steeplechase championship with a time of 9:56.13.

Seton Catholic had another distance runner in the field, with Margaret Champagne running in the girls’ 1-mile freshman run. She finished in 5:19.53, which was good for 10th place.

Champagne notched a sixth-place finish in the 3,000 at last week’s state championships with a time 10:25.36.
