PHS handles Peru in Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge

PLATTSBURGH — Brooks Kelley’s 13 points and Nate Harrington’s 11 helped Plattsburgh overpower Peru, 44-31, in the boys’ basketball portion of the Coaches vs. Cancer CVAC Challenge at the Plattsburgh State Field House Friday.

Garrett Frady was another top contributor for PHS scoring 10 points with all of them coming from the free throw line. The Hornets would finish the game going 19 for 29 from the charity stripe.

“We knew it was going to be a physical game,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Hartman said. “We just had to fight back and we were able to hit important foul shots.”

Conor Casey was Peru’s top earner putting eight points on the board and Tim Remillard added to the fight by chipping in seven points in the loss.

Willsboro 40, Johnsburg 22

WILLSBORO — With just six players eligible for the game, Willsboro showed an impressive effort on the defensive side of the ball in a commanding 40-22 win over Johnsburg.

Junior forward Nick Arnold paced the Warriors with 13 points, while teammate Brandon Porter added 10 markers, including two 3-point field goals.

“We were subbing frequently with a limited number of players, but it was a great team effort,” Willsboro head coach Jim Spring said. “To Johnsburg’s credit, they played hard all game long. They did not concede in the loss.”

Junior center Dillon Moore paced the Jaguars with nine points.

Elizabethtown/Lewis 52, Keene Valley 26

KEENE VALLEY — The Lions outscored the Beavers 17-0 in the first quarter and never looked back to take the win in boys MVAC basketball play.

E-Town/Lewis’s Charlie Huttig led all scorers with 16 points including two 3-pointers. The lions also had production from Cortland White with 14 points and Justin Lapiere tallying 10.

Colton Venner and Brandon Dumas were each able to contribute 10 points for Keene Valley while Gabe Warner also added 6 points to round out the scorers for the Beavers.

“They (E-Town) played really hard and intense basketball,” Keene coach Chad Lopez said. “They hit us with a full court 1-3-1 press in the first that was very effective.”

“We are still trying to find our identity as a team,” he added.

Crown Point 65, Chazy 57 (OT)

CROWNPOINT — Mike Gould scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the Panthers grab the win over the Eagles in MVAC action.

Crown Point took control of the game early and ended the half up eight points. Chazy had other plans to open the second. The eagles came out and outscored the Panthers 24-6 in the third quarter.

“They came out and punched us in the mouth in the third,” Crown Point coach John Swinton said. “We could have buried our head at that point, but the kids stepped up to the plate in the fourth and showed what they got.”

The Panthers would send it to overtime when Gould hit a free throw with 1.8 seconds left to play. Crown Point outscored Chazy 26-8 in the fourth and overtime combined.

Chazy had solid performances from Keenen Hampton with 22 points and Hayden Guay who had 15. Craig Botten also chipped in 13.

Crown Point’s Gabe Macey led his team in scoring putting up 21 points including two 3-pointers.

MALONE — The Huskies had three players score 10 points each as they knocked off the Blue Devils.

Mitchell Gallagher, Kody Mulverhill and Nate Monette all tallied 10 points in Franklin Academy’s victory. Jon Dunlavey chipped in with nine points, while Connor Dailey added eight.

Breton Larose scored a game-high 15 points to lead the way for Ogdensburg. Pat Cosmo added 11 points, while Kinnon Larose finished with 10.
