PHS rally falls short in hockey

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh High School Hornets dug themselves out of a big hole Monday night, but couldn’t finish the deal as Northwood School scored with 4:26 to play to come away with a 5-4 victory in hockey action at Ameri-Can North Sports Centre.

“It was a tale of two halves,” PHS Coach Jamie Reidy said. “We got everything we deserved the first period. We were lacking in everything — energy, skills, concentration …”

Eli Kinsman, Noah Wild and Matt Edwards all scored to give the visiting Huskies a 3-0 lead after one period. Pierre Laffitte extended the lead to four goals early in the second, before PHS finally got untracked.

Eric Bechard broke through at 5:17 and then the Hornets responded with three goals in the first nine minutes of the third to tie it at four. Jack Tolosky, who also picked up two assists on the night, connected at 1:05, John Anthony Fine-Lease tallied at 3:51 and then Andrew Bechard tied it with an unassisted tally at 8:45.

“An eighth-grader, Andrew Bechard, and our freshman goalie, Giancarlo Ventre, led us back,” Reidy added. “They were outstanding.”

But Northwood’s Ian Nathan thwarted the PHS comeback with a goal at 10:34 and the Huskies held on for the victory.

Ventre finished with 39 saves while Northwood tender Bradley Stone stopped 18 shots.

“I was not happy with our start, but I was happy with the second half of the game,” Reidy continued. “It was important for us to rebound with a big game on Friday.”

Plattsburgh High will take on Beekmantown at 7 p.m. at AC-North with the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference championship on the line.

PLATTSBURGH — Grant Strack recorded a hat trick and Nicholas Bayruns added a goal and an assist to lead the Red Storm to victory.

Strack’s second goal, just 56 seconds into the third period, broke a 1-1 tie. He completed his hat trick two minutes later and then Bayruns added an insurance goal midway through the period.

“We had some defensive zone breakdowns that hurt us. We couldn’t get out of our own end at times,” Saranac Coach Ed Davis said.

Strack opened the scoring 2:31 into the second period, but Kyle Erickson knotted it for Saranac at 7:59.

“The first two periods we played some of our best hockey so far,” Saranac Coach Ed Davis said. “We came out with a lot of heart. Even in the third period we had a lot of chances to score, but their goalie (Blake Darrah) came up big.”

Darrah finished with 17 saves while Zach Lareau recorded 25 saves for the Chiefs.
