Class C semifinal games need OT

PLATTSBURGH — 110 minutes of soccer couldn’t decide the Section VII Class C semifinal matchup between Northern Adirondack and Lake Placid Friday.

The game came down to penalty kicks.

The Bobcats move into the Class C championship outlasting the Blue Bombers 4-3 in penalty kicks.

The Bobcats were unable to capitalize off numerous scoring opportunities, including a total of seven corner kicks throughout the game. Northern Adirondack also led the Blue Bombers 14-4, in shots on goal

“We had our opportunities we just couldn’t score,” Bobcats coach Sharon Relation said.

The Bobcats lone goal came 17:05 in the first half, when Juliana Gardner played a ball across the six-yard box, which Rachael Venne was able to tap in for the goal.

Lake Placid tied it up in the second half when Liza Marinis muscled her way through Northern Adirondack’s defense and struck a ball past Bobcats’ keeper, Anna Lashway.

Scoring chances from both teams were slim in overtime; however the Bobcats did miss two good looks that sailed just wide of the net and over the crossbar from Makenna and Magan Magee in the last minute of sudden death.

In penalty kicks, Emma Godin and Taylor Barney made the first two shots for Lake Placid, however Laura Stanton missed the Blue Bombers’ third penalty kick wide, and Juli Matos missed the fifth penalty kick over the cross bar, while the Bobcats were able to finish on all four of their shots to win the match.

Stanton recorded eight saves for the Blue Bombers, while Lashway finished the game with four saves.

Although the top-seeded Bobcats move on to the sectional finals, Relation was disappointed her team wasn’t able to win in regulation or overtime play.

“It’s a little bittersweet, winning games in penalty kicks,” Relation said. “Obviously we’d like to win those in regulation, if not overtime.”

Relation gave credit to the Blue Bombers’ defense, and also recognized Lake Placid’s senior group for a hard fought game.

“Hats off to their defense (Friday), their seniors played well and they had a great team effort,” Relation said.

Northern Adirondack will take on Seton Catholic Wednesday to determine the Class C Section VII champion.

Seton Catholic 1,Ticonderoga 0 (OT)

Nearly 99 minutes of soccer was played before Seton Catholic put in the only goal of the match in sudden death overtime to defeat the Sentinels in the Class C Section VII semifinal Friday.

With 1:30 left in the final overtime period, Ticonderoga fouled Ashley Carpenter in the box and gave the Knights a penalty kick.

Carpenter was able to bury the shot in the far right corner and advance Seton Catholic to the sectional finals.

“Ashley did a great job of getting in that position to give us a penalty kick,” Seton Catholic coach Jason Fenner said.

Most of the game was a stalemate, as both offenses struggled to get dangerous scoring opportunities.

The Knights outshot the Sentinels, 15-4 but unfortunately couldn’t capitalize until late.

“It was just one of those games that was destined for overtime,” Fenner said. “Ticonderoga did well and made it difficult for us to do what we’ve been able to do all year.”

Fenner credited Clara Giroux for an excellent game in the midfield and added that she “stood out among the rest.”

Sadie Hamel finished the game with nine saves for Ticonderoga, while Kelli Ryan finished with three saves for Seton Catholic.
