PLATTSBURGH — Harrisville never knew what hit it.
The Chazy boys erupted for four goals in the first 7:54 of the game and held an 8-0 advantage with 24:46 gone in the half on the way to a 10-0 rout in NYSPHSAA Class D regional championship soccer play Saturday at the Plattsburgh High School Athletic Complex.
The Section VII and defending state champions (17-1-3) will play in the Final Four semifinals at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday in Middletown against either Fort Ann or Smithtown Christian.
Harrisville (16-2-2), the Section X champion, won its sectional crown on Thursday night in overtime over Morristown and came into Saturday’s contest a weary team that was also missing its best player (Jared Dreythaler) due to a broken ankle.
The Pirates were no match for the Eagles, who came out a determined group.
“I felt good about the team’s mindset going into the game,” Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe said. “We were relaxed and focused.
“I knew the first 20 minutes of the game would be crucial and we played very well.”
Alec LaPierre and Hayden Guay teamed up to give Chazy a 2-0 lead just 4:17 into the game.
LaPierre headed in Guay’s corner kick at the 3:05 mark and then headed in another Guay corner kick shortly after, at 4:17, to make it 2-0.
“I think getting that second goal right away was big for us,” McAuliffe said. “One of the things we have been good at this year is our restarts and today was no different.
“Guay does a great job setting up chances for us and LaPierre is dominant in the box.”
The Eagles weren’t done scoring, however, as the goals continued to come often and quickly.
Alex Rabideau moved down the middle after taking a pass from Zach Brothers and found the far corner of the net at 7:03 to make it 3-0.
Gage Ducatte then scored off a scramble in front, with Brothers getting another assist, at 7:54 to give Chazy a 4-0 advantage.
At 18:30, Harrisville keeper Chris Sullivan made the initial save on Josh Barriere’s shot, but Rabideau was there to put home the rebound.
Then, at 19:35, Barriere was credited with a goal that went off a Harrisville defender to make it 6-0.
Another Guay corner kick resulted in Barriere’s goal off a scramble at 23:11 and the Eagles closed out their first-half scoring, and an 8-0 lead, when Rabideau got behind the Harrisville defense after taking a thru ball from Brendan Ryan.
The Eagles, who finished with a 26-3 shot advantage, sat their starters for a part of the first half and then for nearly 30 minutes in the second stanza.
Chazy tallied two more goals after intermission.
Alex Duprey headed in a corner kick at 27:21, with Thomas Thibault assisting, and Dylan Garrow added the finishing touch off a nice individual effort with 14 seconds left.
“We played very well,” McAuliffe said. “To Harrisville’s credit, it was difficult emotionally for them. But I was proud of the way we played — we really did score some good goals.”
Trent Blais (1) and Austin Gravelle (1) combined for the shutout with two saves. Sullivan stopped 12 shots for the Pirates.
Harrisville had to play four games in a week’s time and only had one day to rest following its overtime sectional championship win. Not as easy task going up a team the quality of Chazy.
