Mountaineers edge Jaguars in MVAC baseball

NORTH CREEK — Justin Viele rapped out three hits, scored two runs and drove in one as Minerva/Newcomb held on for an 8-7 win over Johnsburg in Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference baseball Wednesday.

Bryton Chikukwa added a double for the Mountaineers, which held a 5-4 lead after two innings. Minerva/Newcomb added an important run in the top of the seventh for an 8-6 advantage before the Jaguars tallied one in the home half.

Andrew Sponable struck out eight in going the first 6.2 innings for the pitching win. Wesley LaBar got the final out in the seventh for the save. Kyle LaBounty went the route in taking the loss.

Ethan Cooper had a big day at the plate for the Jaguars, going 3-for-3, including a triple. Moses Mulvey chipped in with two hits.

Crown Point 15, Westport 2

CROWN POINT — Jon Spaulding drove in three runs to help power the Panthers past the Eagles in a game that was called after five innings due to darkness.

Ryan Worth hit a two-run double for Crown Point, which jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Robbie Macey pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11 and walking just one.

Lloyd Staats and Tyrell Tryon had Westport’s hits. Ryan Davis took the loss.
