Lake Placid wins, Saranac Lake captures tie in boys' hockey

SARANAC LAKE — The Lake Placid boys’ hockey team was able to hold off Niskayuna/Schenectady despite a third-period charge to win the first game of the Casey McHugh Memorial Hockey Tournament on Friday.

The Blue Bombers will face Burnt Hills/Balston Spa today, and Niskayuna/Schenectady will play Saranac Lake. The tournament is based on a points system.

Keegan Barney scored two goals in under a minute in Friday’s first period. The first came from a pass by Ryan Damp, and the second was assisted by Eddie Kane and Nzoni Thompson.

Lake placid tallied two more in the second period. Shane McNierney scored after a Conner Preston pass, and five minutes later Ryan Damp added an unassisted goal to bring the lead to 4-0 at the end of the period.

The Mohawks made it a game when they put two scores on the board early in the third. Matt Peretti grabbed the first off an assist from Luke Miller and Ben Fisher while Lucas Maloney brought his team within two with another assist by Fisher.

McNierney added his second goal of the game late in the third when Eddie Kane fed him the puck to seal the deal.
