Blue Bombers fall behind early, can't climb back

LAKE PLACID — The Plattsburgh High School boys’ hockey team put Lake Placid in an early hole Thursday night.

And the Blue Bombers couldn’t dig themselves out of it.

Plattsburgh took a 3-0 lead in the first period and skated to a 4-2 victory in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.

In the first, John Anthony Fine-Lease scored from Eric Bechard and Andrew Bechard at 2:49, Devin Clarke from Andrew Bechard and Colin Giroux at 10:32 and Andrew Bechard from Alex Maston and Fine-Lease at 11:39.

It stayed 3-0 through the second period, and Lake Placid tried to rally in the third when Eddie Kane scored unassisted at 7:12 and then Nzoni Thompson, off assists by Keegan Barney and Ryan Damp, at 10:43.

But the Hornets sealed it with Maston’s unassisted empty-net goal with 25 seconds left in regulation.

“We dug a hole too big for ourselves,” Lake Placid coach Keith Clark said. “PHS got off to a good start and we weren’t ready to play. They pounced on us, and it was disappointing.

“We had some pressure after we cut it to a goal. But we didn’t start playing well until 10 minutes were left, and it was too little, too late.”

The Blue Bombers held a 26-18 advantage in shots on goal, and Giancarlo Ventre stopped 24-of-26 shots in the Plattsburgh nets. Tucker Angelopoulos made 15 saves for the Blue Bombers.
