Lake Placid plays to tie

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Blue Bombers settled for a 4-4 standoff with the Norwood-Norwood Flyers Monday afternoon after squandering a two-goal lead in the last 4 minutes of regulation.

Lake Placid (7-2-3) took a 4-2 advantage into the third period, but couldn’t hold on for the victory. Brandon Short scored a power-play goal at 11:34 for the Flyers, who then pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. The move paid off when Cody Smith tipped in a shot from the point with 19 seconds left in the game.

“We have to learn to take care of the lead,” Lake Placid Coach Keith Clark said. “The kids played hard, but we let one get away from us.

“It was a good game with a lot of up-and-down action. They’re a good transition team and we like to generate our offense in our zone.”

Each side scored twice in the first 15 minutes with Shane McNierney opening the gates with an unassisted tally at 2:52. After Troy Kovach and Dan Fyckes put Norwood-Norfolk up 2-1, Dillon Savage knotted it at 13:01.

Savage then gave the Blue Bombers a 3-2 lead with a goal 59 seconds into the second period. Eddie Kane connected three minutes later to extend the Blue Bombers’ lead to 4-2.

Lake Placid outshot Norwood-Norfolk 25-24 with Kamm Cassidy making 20 saves in the Blue Bomber goal. Norwood-Norfolk (7-6-1) used three goaltenders.

Lake Placid returns to play Wednesday, facing off against Northeastern Clinton in a CVAC contest in Rouses Point.

Ogdensburg 4, Malone 1

MALONE — Within Section X, road trips have been extremely successful for the Ogdensburg Blue Devils hockey team.

The Blue Devils, playing a Martin Luther King day matinee in Malone on Monday, continued their winning ways away from home with a 4-1 victory over the Huskies.

Ogdensburg, ranked 15th in New York State Division II, improved to 5-0 on the road, 7-1-1 in NAC Division II, and 8-3-2, overall.

“It was a pretty even first period. But we started applying more offensive pressure in the second period,” said OFA coach Jon Fredricks. “This was our fourth game in six days and after hosting our Brian Wade Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday, I was a little concerned. But we played pretty well.

“Brandon Mullin and Jake Garrison continued their solid forward play, Drew Costigan scored a nice goal in the second period to get us started and defensively we did a solid job. David Prudhomme continues to be strong in net for us and offensively we were able to put 41 shots on goal. We’re on good roll.”

Drew Costigan started the scoring with 8:15 left of the second period from Nolan Rufa. Mullim made it 2-0 late in the second with 1:10 left from Garrison.

Malone cut the difference to 2-1 when Trevor Cooley scored on a power-play, assisted by Kelsey Head and Cameron Daniels, just 45 second into the third, However, the Huskies couldn’t get the equalizer and OFA picked up an even-strength goal with 12:11 remaining when Mullin scored his second of the game, from Gian Rufa and Mark Morrow. Burke Comeau added an insurance goal on a power-play with1:59 left on passes from Garrison and Mullin.

Joey Brown had 37 saves for Malone (7-6-1, 3-5-1 league).

In other hockey action, Massena won a 3-1 decision over Canton in NAC Division I play and

St. Lawrence Central denied Saranac Lake 7-3.

In girls’ action, Potsdam beat Skaneateles 5-2.
