The 2011-12 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference belonged to the Saranac Chiefs.

The Chiefs went a perfect 15-0 in the CVAC last season, and finished with a 22-1 record. The lone loss came in the Class B state semifinal contest against Irvington.

Saranac has a lot of returning players from last season’s team, but loses a talented group of seniors.

Gunning for supremacy this season in Class B will be an up-and-coming Beekmantown squad that surprised a lot of teams down the stretch last season and made it to the Section VII Class B title game.

The Section VII Class C champion Moriah Vikings will need to reload if they want to repeat again this season. The Vikings lost nearly its entire team, only returning two players.

DIVISION I

Beekmantown

The Eagles were one of the youngest teams in the CVAC a season ago, and this season still only possess one senior on the roster in newcomer Carleigh Waite.

Beekmantown showed its youth at the start of the season, but grew as a team throughout the year and made it to the Section VII Class B championship game before falling to Saranac.

The Eagles return eight players from last year’s roster, including sophomores Shannon Ryan and Grace Kelly and juniors Emily Anderson and Courtney Wilson.

Lost, however, was promising point guard Katrine Fogelstroem, who was an exchange student a season ago.

Northeastern Clinton

The Cougars hope to see a return to glory again this season after failing to make the Section VII Class B title game for the first time in many years.

Northeastern Clinton returns six quality players from last year’s team, and hopes that some of the newcomers can add to the mix.

The Cougars are looking for patient play and good, quality team basketball as they are not deep and are lacking in size.

Peru

The is a new sheriff in town on the Indians’ sideline as longtime coach Ryon O’Connell has handed the reins to Dave Baroody this season.

Baroody inherits a talented team that only loses three players from last season’s team and has one of the top point guards in the CVAC in Mary Mazzella.

Lost, though, is talented inside presence Jessica Decker. Emily Major will be looked at to provide inside scoring and defense.

Peru doesn’t lack in shooting, as it returns Mazzella, Brianna Hackett and Maddy Flynn who can all knock down 3-pointers.

Plattsburgh

The Hornets bring nearly its entire lineup intact from last season as the only lose two players to graduation.

Plattsburgh boasts a talented backcourt led by Marle Curle and Olivia Carlsson.

The Hornets, though, may lack the size to match inside. Forwards Brin Keyser, Kianna Dragoon and Ashley Marlow will look to their athletic ability on the inside to make up for the size discrepancy.

Saranac

The Chiefs only lost four players off of last season’s Class B state Final Four squad, however, they were four outstanding players, which includes CVAC MVP Stephanie Linder.

Saranac returns two starters from last season in Kayla Napper and Victoria Phaneauf, but all returning players saw significant playing time a year ago and gained valuable experience.

The Chiefs will again possess a strong defensive unit, but will need to find some new scoring threats with Linder and Alisha Ducatte’s departures.

Saranac Lake

The Red Storm could be a team that surprises a lot of people this season as they return their entire starting lineup from a year ago, including All-Star Nicole Viscardo.

Saranac Lake will look to its guard play from Megan Moody and Megan Kilroy as a key to this season’s success.

The Red Storm hope to possess a balanced scoring punch this year.

Saranac Lake will also have a deeper bench as it has 11 players on its roster this season.

AuSable Valley

The Patriots will be looking to capture the Div. II title for the sixth consecutive season this year.

AuSable Valley returns a lot of talent from last season, including guards Taylor Saltus and Meghan Strong, and forward Madison Rondeau.

What the Patriots lack in size they hope to make up in quickness, shooting and basketball IQ.

AuSable Valley will also be making the switch to Class C this season, dropping down from Class B a year ago.

Northern Adirondack

The Bobcats return to the CVAC with a varsity squad after not having enough players a season ago.

Northern Adirondack has struggled in years past to capture a win, but is looking for positive outcomes this season after a 9-5 record on the JV a season ago.

The Bobcats return nearly everyone from last year’s JV squad and are looking to use the familiarity to their advantage. They possess speed and quickness, but lack in size.

Northern Adirondack will also have to overcome the lack of varsity experience.

Moriah

The Vikings were the team that was hit the hardest by graduation this season.

Moriah returns just two players from last season’s Section VII Class C champion squad in Lauren Pelkey and Val Wykes.

Pelkey and Wykes will be looked to for leadership this season as the Vikings newcomers look to get comfortable on the varsity.

Moriah does have talented, versatile athletes and will look to play 8-to-10 players on any given night.

Seton Catholic

The Knights lost four players from last season’s Section VII Class C runner-up team.

Paige Spittler and Kelli Ryan return to the starting lineup for Seton Catholic this season, while returners Shannon Egan and Maddison Murnane make the move from bench players to starters.

The Knights will also insert newcomer Samantha Bashaw into the lineup to round out the starting five.

Ticonderoga also has zero newcomers to the team as all players have varsity experience from a year ago.

Andrea Rich, a third-team All-Star a season ago, returns to lead the experience squad that should make a lot of noise in Class C this year.
