Beekmantown falls in Upstate Girls' semifinals

CLAYTON — The Beekmantown girls’ hockey team managed to bounce back from two one-goal deficits in its Upstate Girls’ Hockey League semifinal bout against Skaneateles Friday.

The Lakers’ offense, however, exploded inside the final 12 minutes and 17 seconds of play to pull away.

Paige Postalwait, Riley Donahue, Madison Singler and Sarah Sauda each scored third-period goals as Skaneateles upended the Eagles (16-7) to reach today’s state championship, 6-2.

Caroline McGuigan opened the game’s scoring with 2:12 gone in the first period on an assist from Sauda to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

But Beekmantown’s Katie Matott managed to slip a shot past Skaneateles goaltender Amanda Lupo to tie the game at 1-all with two seconds showing on the clock at the Clayton Recreation Park Arena. The goal was scored unassisted.

After Singler made it 2-1 with 7:02 gone in the middle period, Kallie Villemaire scored the Eagles’ second and final goal on the power play at 0:50 of the third period.

Beekmantown freshman Taylor Laurin stopped 4-of-9 shots faced between the pipes before being pulled for Kayleigh Bell. The Lakers also managed an empty-net goal with 14 seconds remaining.

Lupo was a force in net for Skaneateles, fending off all 29 shots.

During the course of their 20-game regular season, the Eagles went 1-1 against the Lakers. Beekmantown dropped a 3-2 game Dec. 21 before skating to a 3-2 win Jan. 24.
