POTSDAM — The Chateaugay and Heuvelton girls’ soccer teams didn’t have problems finding the back of the net while going unbeaten against Northern Athletic Conference opponents this season.
But when the two played each other, it was a different story.
After playing to a scoreless nonleague contest during the regular season at Clarkson University, the two played scoreless soccer again until Hannah Cook’s goal early in the second overtime gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory on Thursday in the Section X Class D championship game.
“This was a great game and it’s unbelievable that a 0-0 game could be so exciting, Chateaugay coach Steve Lang said. “But we were able to keep the pressure on and finally broke through.
“In two games against them this year, the two teams played 191 minutes of soccer before someone scored.”
The Bulldogs (18-0-1) now oppose Section VII champion Chazy Saturday at the Plattsburgh High School Athletic Complex, with a berth in the NYSPHSAA final four on the line.
Chateaugay, in winning its fifth consecutive Section X Class D title, scored the game-winning goal 1:47 into the second extra stanza.
“Katie Beach took the ball down the middle and had a touch pass to Hannah,” Lang said. “Hannah had two defenders on her, but she sent a low shot on the ground just inside the post.
“It was a great goal and a great game.”
Chateaugay held a 16-5 advantage in shots, with Kennedy Boyea recording the shutout with three saves. Paige McCormick stopped 13 shots for Heuvelton.
“We held the edge in play, but not as much as the shots would indicate,” Lang said. “It was probably more like 55-45 in our favor. Their defense was very strong and they had two strikers who we had to watch all the time.
“Taylor Winch and Courtney Yando did a great job marking on defense, Rachel Young and Danielle Charland were strong in the midfield, and Hannah Cook was as strong as she usually is.
“They also did a good job marking our offense. Both teams held strong. They’re now 16-1-2 and were ranked No. 8 in the state and deservedly so. It was a pretty equally matched game.”
