PHS, young stars dominate in swimming

CLINTONVILLE — There was a definite undercurrent flowing in the Clintonville pool Saturday during the Section VII Girls’ Swimming Championships.

Underclassmen dominated the competition with Brin Keyser’s two firsts in the freestyle relays accounting for the only first-place finishes by a senior in the championships.

Eighth-grader Brooke Kelley joined her sister, Alexis, a sophomore, and junior Amanda Leonard as four-time winners in leading favored Plattsburgh High to an overwhelming victory. Junior Kelsey Primard also got into the act with two firsts as the Hornets piled up 421 points to nearly double the score of runner-up Peru, with 223. AuSable Valley was a close third with 220, followed by Moriah, 166.

It was a big day for eighth-graders. Emily McCormick, swimming before the AuSable Valley home crowed, pulled off a double in the freestyle distance races. She won the 500 by more than 10 seconds and came back to take the 200 by six-plus seconds.

Niki Rodgers placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke, giving PHS a 1-2 eighth-grade finish. Rodgers also grabbed a fourth in the 200 individual medley.

Lydia Brown, yet another eighth-grade standout, came in second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 50 freestyle for AuSable Valley. Peru seventh-grader Mikayla Fountain placed fifth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Alexis Kelley turned in the only record performance of the day. She won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.46 to break the AuSable Valley pool record of 1:05.41 set by Peru’s Theresa Bobal in 1984.

The sectional champions will go on to the state meet in Ithaca in two weeks.
