Hartford defeats NAC in Class D

CLINTONVILLE — Northern Adirondack had trouble with its serves as it fell to Hartford 3-0 in an NYSPHSAA volleyball sub-regional game Tuesday at AuSable Valley Central School.

“I feel like we did as well as we could have. There were some really good plays,” Northern Adirondack coach Katrina Castine said. “Serving hurt us tonight. We couldn’t get them over, or they went out.”

Hartford, the Section II champion, had a 7-2 spurt early in the first game to take a 10-5 lead, and it went on to win 25-17. The second game was tied 9-9 before the Tanagers pulled away for a 25-13 victory.

In the third game, the Bobcats (10-8) had a strong stretch where they took a 10-7 lead, forcing the Tanagers to call a timeout. Then Hartford came back out and scored four straight points to pull ahead. Northern Adirondack never led again, and Hartford took the game 25-21 to win the match.

“We were trying to stay positive,” Castine said. “With our team it seems when we get down, it’s very hard to bounce back. And we’ve struggled through that the whole season.

“I think everybody wanted it; I think some wanted it a little bit more and worked a little bit harder.”

Rachel Liebig paced Hartford with 18 points and 31 assists. Gwenn Harsha slammed down a team-high 18 kills to go along with five digs, and Morgan Wicks had nine points, 5 kills and 13 digs.

“They have a couple good hitters, and we just weren’t able to dig the ball and keep it under control,” Castine said.

Zoey Varin led the Bobcats with eight kills. Emma Trombley added five points, five assists and five kills, and MacKenzie Fountain had nine assists. Hannah Charland chipped in four points, five kills and five digs
