PLATTSBURGH — Taylor Maiorca recorded the final kill just inside the Northern Adirondack box as Lake Placid rallied from down a set to win the Section VII Class D volleyball championship at Clinton Community College Saturday.

The Blue Bombers claimed their first sectional title since 1992 in a five-set thriller that saw both teams exchanging long scoring streaks.

Trailing 22-18 in the fourth set, Lake Placid scored seven of the final eight points to force a decisive fifth set. Coach Donna Moody said that rally ignited the spark her team had been missing through the previous sets.

“Once we started scoring those points, our players really started to think that we could pull this off and win it all,” Moody said. “With NAC, it’s going to be a battle, and you have to come match that intensity. Throughout the season, we showed spurts of what we could do, and it came together toward the end of (Saturday’s) match.”

In last year’s championship match, Northern Adirondack claimed the title in a three-set sweep. This season, Maiorca led the Blue Bombers to victory with 21 points and 16 assists. Brenna Garrett chipped in 16 points, 16 kills and nine assists.

“This is huge for our program,” Moody said. “Before the match, we said how there would be no regrets after (Saturday). We were going to leave everything on the floor.”

Lake Placid advances to the NYSPHSAA sub-regional round Tuesday in Massena against Section X champion Chateaugay.

AuSable Valley Claims Class C

PLATTSBURGH — AuSable Valley swept Plattsburgh 3-0 to repeat as sectional champion.

The Patriots won with scores of 25-11, 25-8 and a 25-16 final set that was capped off by a Noelle Miller block for match point.

“I can’t recall a championship match ending on a block,” AuSable Valley coach Sandra Hoey said. “It’s unusual, but we’ll take it.”

The Patriots had no problem taking the first two sets, reeling off six unanswered points midway through the first set. Then in the second, Miller served up four aces as AuSable Valley cruised to a 25-8 win. Her nearly perfect line-drive serve handcuffed the Hornets’ receivers.

“I don’t really try to serve the ball in any particular way,” Miller said, “it just kind of happens.”

Plattsburgh also ran into trouble with its own service errors. Still, head coach Shea LaPorte was pleased with her players.

“Maya Browne (10 digs) was thrown in and showed great composure,” LaPorte said. “Amanda McMahon stepped up and played well.”

The Hornets were led by Deanna LaBarge’s six kills and six digs.
