Moriah's Snyder, Saranac boys indoor standouts

CANTON — Moriah’s Halie Snyder shattered three Section VII records while the Saranac boys, on a record tear of their own, rolled to 37-point victory over 15 other schools Saturday night in the 2014 North Country Invitational in indoor track & field at St. Lawrence University.

Snyder was easily the individual standout of the meet with three victories, all in record efforts. She broke Section VII indoor records in the 55-meter sprint (7.0 seconds)m 300 meters (40.7) and long jump (17-10). Not only did Snyder accomplish the sweep in record fashion, she did it convincingly. Her margins of victory were 0.4 seconds in the 55 meters, 2.0 seconds in the 300 and 11 inches in the long jump.

While Snyder was dominating the girls’ competition, the Saranac boys were prevailing on the boys’ side in  big way. Several Chiefs turned in personal-bests, led by the 4x800-meter relay team of Dustin Durgan, Sean Tyrell, Justin Liechty and Zach LePage who ran an 8:26.7. It bettered the old school record of 8:37.00 and came within .27 of the Section VII mark.

Sobaan Ayub was a three-time winner for Saranac, setting a school record for the 55-meter hurdles of 8.1 seconds. He came back to win the 300-meter dash and joined Lance Hackett, Liechty and Durgan in edging Ogdensburg by 0.3 seconds to win the 4x400 relay in 3:37.1.

Teammate Caiden Goodman tied the school record for the 55-meter dash, finishing second in 6.5 seconds.

The Chiefs scored in all but two of the 14 events to finish with 113 points, well ahead of runner-up Ogdensburg, with 113.

Malone, led by Abe Gravell’s winning high jump of 6-feet-1-inch, came in fourth with 45 points while Plattsburgh High, on the strength of another stellar performance by Jeriqho Gadway, was seventh with 36 points. Gadway won the 1,600 in 4:28.1 and the 3,200 in 10:00.8. Westport’s Jonathan Gay was runner-up in the 1,600 with a personal-best of 4:39.9 while Seton Catholic’s Evan Page placed second in the 3,200 in 10:11.4.

Nadeau sets record

Moriah’s Arto Nadeau turned in a record-smashing time in the 55-meter dash, winning in 6.4 seconds (hand time). It bested the section standard of 6.4 set by Peru’s Henderson in 2002.

Canton, led by distance standout Laura Pierce, won the girls’ meet with 135 points, nearly double Malone’s 70. Plattsburgh High was a close third with 68.5.

Malone’s Emily Pomainville won the 3,000 meters, took second in the 1,500 and anchored the Huskies’ first-place distance relay team which included Rebekkah Bond, Morgan Bronner and Madeleine Champagne. Bond also gave the Huskies a first in the 600 meters.

Brooke Knight, the Carper twins and Claire Deshaies led Plattsburgh High’s strong showing. Kaylia Carper won the 55 hurdles with her sister Ashlee finishing third. Knight and Kaylia Carper finished 1-2 in the triple jump and then 2-3 in the long. Deshaies was second in the 300 meters.

Saranac’s Meghann Wood was second in the shot put and Seton’s Ashley Leta second in the 600. Beekmantown’s Villemaire sisters each garnered a third — Kallie in the 300 and Kirsten in the 1,000.

Elysha O’Connell of Saranac came in third in the 3,000 meters.

The Section VII Indoor Championships are scheduled for Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House.
