Semifinals set in Section VII tennis

PLATTSBURGH — The boys’ New York State Section VII tennis qualifier along with the Section VII Individual Tournament for girls’ kicked off Monday in both singles and doubles play.

On the boys’ side, all four top seeds survived in singles, including defending champion Shawn Bissonette of Saranac.

Bissonette blanked Northeastern Clinton’s Jordan Brilotti 6-0 and 6-0 before eliminating Devin McManus of Northeastern Clinton in quarterfinal play, 6-1 and 6-0.

Bissonette, who outscored his opponents 24-1, will play Peru’s Johnny McAuliffe in the first of two semifinal matches at Plattsburgh High this afternoon.

After advancing past Josh Ferris of Plattsburgh High 6-0 and 6-1, McAuliffe bested teammate Connor Bond in a thrilling quarterfinal that needed two tiebreakers.

In the other half of the bracket, Northeastern Clinton’s Ryan Marks defeated Plattsburgh High competitors Tuan Luu (6-0, 6-2) and Anthony Girard (6-0, 6-2) to move on.

Marks will meet Peter Daly of Peru, who defeated Northeastern Clinton’s Troy Tetreault (6-0, 6-3) and Shun Kato of Seton Catholic (6-0, 6-1).

Northeastern Clinton’s Austin Tetreault and Brendan Boutin, who bested second-seeded Kyle Kemp and Patrick Demarais, will face Adam Dodge and Guillermo Saguar of Plattsburgh High in the first of two boys’ doubles semifinals.

On the other half of the bracket, Chris Gray and Brendan Whalen of Plattsburgh High will face Northeastern Clinton’s top-seeded McKenna Hunter and Adam Khater.

Tetreault and Boutin were able to upend Lake Placid’s Steven Jelinek and David Knapik 6-2, 7-6(7-5) before upsetting Kemp and Demarais in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(7-5).

After a first-round bye, Dodge and Saguar eliminated Saranac’s Matt Bouyea and Elijah Boliver 6-4, 7-6 and (7-2).

Gray and Whalen were forced to fend off the likes off Justin Kellett and Scott Kellett of Northern Adirondack, 7-5 and 6-3.

They’ll meet Hunter and Khater, who made quick work of Danh Pham and Keagan Briggs of Seton Catholic, 6-0 and 6-0.

Semifinal action is slated for 3 p.m. at Plattsburgh High.


After two victories Monday, Plattsburgh High’s Marle Curls hopes to avenge last year’s championship loss in girls’ singles.

Second-seeded Curle defeated Alexa Sorrell 6-0 and 6-1 before eliminating teammate Olivia Carlson, 6-3 and 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Curle will meet Beekmantown’s Olivia Wyand in the first of two semifinal matchups this afternoon.

Wyand, the fourth overall seed, defeated Seton Catholic’s Kelli Ryan in three sets in the Second Round before besting Kelsey Senecal of Plattsburgh High in the quarterfinals, 6-3 and 6-1.

Margaret Mitchell of Peru will meet Lake Placid’s Georgia O’Leary in the second semifinal after early-round victories.

Mitchell defeated Aurora Slater (Northeastern Clinton) 6-2 and 6-0 before beating Michaela Courson (AuSable Valley), 6-2 and 6-1.

O’Leary outscored her opponents 24-6, eliminating teammates Liza Marinis and Brenna Garret.

On the doubles side, top-seeded Aryana Kellison and Andrea Mossey of Northeastern Clinton were knocked off by teammates Sarah Babbie and Morgan Rabideau.

Babbie and Rabideau will meet Seton Catholic’s Lauren Richter and Alyse Clark this afternoon after the two defeated Shannon Bracale and Hannah LeClair (Plattsburgh High) 6-4 and 6-4 and Bryn Mousseau and Nicole Mooney (Peru), 6-2 and 6-0.

On the other side of the bracket, Victoria O’Leary and Grace McGrew of Lake Placid will meet second-seeded Abbie Miller and Jenna LaValley of Northeastern Clinton.

O’Leary and McGrew bested Beekmantown’s Meagan Bull and Evelyn Vicencio 6-0 and 6-2 before topping third-seeded Kristen Napper and Anna Dorrance of Saranac in the quarterfinals, 6-2 and 6-0.

After an opening-round bye, Miller and LaValley reached the semifinals by defeating Plattsburgh High’s Emilie Kniefel and Kelly Cantwell, 6-3 and 6-4.

Today’s girls’ semifinals are slated for 3 p.m. at the Macdonough courts on the campus of Plattsburgh State.
