SARANAC — Defending Champlain Valley Athletic Conference wrestling champion Peru took a big step towards defending its title by defeating Saranac, 45-23, in a battle of unbeatens Friday night.
The Indians held a 33-23 lead and captured the final three matches of the night to seal it when Brandon Goddeau won by decision at 99, Colin Hogan by decision at 106 and Kyler Agoney by pin at 113.
Also recording pins for Peru was Nick Forget at 126 and Caleb Feazelle at 160.
Winning by decision for the Indians were Ethan Feazelle with an overtime win over Richard Armstrong at 120, Jordan Bushey with a 3-2 victory over Codie Gillette in a battle of standouts at 138, and Noah Phillips a 6-4 victory over James Black at 152.
Troy Seymour (170) and Luke McKee (220) won by forfeit for Peru, giving the Indians 10 wins in all.
Will Marcil (145) and Brandon Dubray (285) won by fall for the Chiefs (8-8, 5-1), while Austin Latulip (132), Colby Staley (182) and Paul Herrera (195) won by decision.
“We hung in there,” said Saranac coach Heath Smith. “Overall, there were a lot of close matches. The kids wrestled well. This was our first time meeting with Peru in a dual meet this year.
“Brandon Dubray had lost to their kid twice earlier, but came back to pin him Friday. Will Marcil wrestled tough and Austin Latulip picked up his 100th-career win with a victory over Tanner Phillips. We lost three matches by three points or less.”
Both the Indians and Chiefs have two remaining league matches, including a rematch in Peru.
