Bobcats finish first

BALLSTON SPA — Saturday was a big day for the Northern Adirondack wrestling team.

The Bobcats compiled a 5-0 team record while finishing in first place in the Ballston Spa Duals.

Northern Adirondack defeated Niskayuna (56-21), Colonie (35-31), Ballston Spa B (79-6), Corinth (59-21) and Ballston Spa A (64-21) on the way to the team championship.

Two Bobcats reached personal milestones.

Justin Kellett, who went 5-0 at 170 pounds, won the 184th match of his varsity wrestling career, breaking the old Section VII mark of 183, set by former Northern Adirondack standout James Charland.

In addition, Matt Lashway, who compiled a 4-1 record at 195, picked up the 100th varsity victory of his career.

Also going unbeaten on the day with 5-0 records, along with Justin Kellett, were Roland LaPoint at 99, Scott Kellett at 138, Collin LaBombard at 145 and Hunter Carpenter at 152.

Brandon LaBombard (132), Lashway and Scott Guerin (285) all compiled 4-1 records.

“We wrestled really, really well,” said Northern Adirondack coach Jamie Gilmore. “We didn’t wrestle well in our loss to Saranac, but we wrestled to our potential today.”

Second place in the event went to Colonie and third to Ballston Spa A.

Peru goes 4-1

KINGSTON — The Peru wrestling team, with Kyler Agoney winning his 100th-career varsity match, compiled a 4-1 record Saturday during the first busy day of action at the Kingston Duals.

Agoney reached the milestone with a pin at 120 pounds in the Indians’ 73-9 victory over Manhasset.

Peru also recorded victories over East Ramado (60-30), Middletown (45-34) and Kingston (58-30). The Indians’ lone setback was the North Rockland (46-36), which is a good bet to win the annual tournament.

Noah Phillips, Caleb Feazelle and Troy Seymour all finished with 5-0 records on the day for Peru.

“It was a good day for us,” Peru co-head coach Mike Hogan said. “We had four kids who were wrestling in their first varsity match today.

“It went pretty well. We had a chance to beat North Rockland but lost a key match that could have made a difference.”

Today, the Indians have five matches against Pearl River, Valley Central, Newburgh Free Academy, Saugerties and Lasalle.
