Saranac wrestlers easily claim Dan Wickham Classic crown

UNATEGO — The Saranac wrestling team crowned four individual champions Saturday and finished in first place in the Dan Wickham Classic, hosted by Unatego High School.

The Chiefs easily won the event with 237.5 points, with host Unatego a distant second with 179.

Rounding out the top five in the 15-team tournament were Delhi with 119, Sidney with 114 and Berne-Knox-Westerlo with 110.

John Devins (99 pounds), Austin LaTulip (132), Codie Gillette (138) and Nate Wood (195) all won their weight classes for the Chiefs.

Devins pinned his Saranac teammate Brendan Yip at 3:32 in the finals, while LaTulip recorded a 6-4 decision over Sidney’s Derek Northrop, Gillette a 9-3 decision over Unadilla Valley’s Tyler Olson, and Wood a 12-2 major decision over Sidney’s Kai Sabada.

Saranac’s Shawn LaGraves reached the finals at 106, but was pinned in 5:57 by Delhi’s Mike Bryden.
