Peru's Bushey advances to state wrestling semifinals

ALBANY — Peru’s Jordan Bushey lived up to his No. 2 seed on Friday at the NYSPHSAA Division II Wrestling Championships held at the Times-Union Center.

Bushey, competing at 160 pounds, was the lone Section VII wrestler to advance to the state semifinals.

Bushey opened the tournament with a pin of Section IX’s Eric Morse in 1:23 and then recorded a 9-3 decision over Section I’s Angelo Zegarelli in the quarterfinals.

Section II’s Connor Lawrence will provide Bushey’s competition in today’s semifinal round.

“Jordan wrestled very well (Friday) — he was terrific and everything looked good,” Peru co-coach Mike Hogan said. “He was quick on his feet and fast. He was tuned in.

“The kid he wrestles in the semifinals is from Duanesburg. Jordan wrestled him in the Eastern States quarterfinals and beat him, 7-6.”

Four other Section VII matmen won their opening-round matches.

Saranac’s Jacob Nolan (99) and Codie Gillette (138), Peru’s Jay Oakes (145) and Northern Adirondack’s Matt Lashway (182) advanced to the quarterfinals where they were defeated.

Nolan opened up with a 6-0 decision over Section IX’s Dean Artrip, Gillette a 5-1 decision over Section V’s Colin Royce, Oakes a 3-0 win over Section I’s Colin Hopkins and Lashway a win by fall in 4:55 over Section X’s Justin Garrison.

In the quarterfinals, Gillette and Oakes lost two tough ones.

Section III’s Laken Cook edged out a 3-2 victory over Gillette, while Section II’s Jason Hoffman edged out a 6-5 decision over Oakes.

Meanwhile, Nolan lost by injury default to Section II’s Zachery Lawrence, who is the No. 2 seed, and Lashway was pinned by Section III’s Daniel Smith in 1:18.

“Codie and Jay lost heartbreakers,” Hogan said. “Both lost by one point and were right in it.

“It was a tough way for Jacob to lose. He was up, 4-0, in his match and slammed the kid back to the mat. Their coach said the kid was injured and couldn’t continue. So, Jacob lost by injury default. It was terrible.”

There was good news, however, for Section VII.

Winning in wrestlebacks were Nolan, Gillette, Oakes, Peru’s Tanner Phillips (152) with two victories following an opening-round loss, Lashway and Saranac’s Paul Herrera (220), who lost his first match but won his next two.

Nolan posted a 7-0 win over Section I’s Mikey Bruno; Gillette a 2-1 victory over Section X’s Zach Ayen; Oakes a 3-1 decision over Section III’s Matt Norris; Phillips a pin in 2:02 over Section VII’s Erick Rodriquez and a pin in 5:53 over New York City’s Nigel Williams; Lashway a 4-3 win over Section VII’s Zach Holowchak; and Herrera a 16-11 victory over Section V’s Dan Welch and a 7-2 decision over Section VI’s Brad Cunningham.

“Our section didn’t do as well as we would have liked in the championship round, but the kids did a great job coming back in the wrestlebacks,” Hogan said.

“All those kids are in a good spot for Saturday. They all need one more win to guarantee to place.”

Saranac’s Rafael Rivera (126) and Colby Staley (170) each won a match on Friday, but lost two each and were eliminated.

Other Section VII wrestlers who failed to win a match and were eliminated included Saranac’s John Devins (106), Peru’s Colin Hogan (113), AuSable Valley’s Dylan Baker (120), Northern Adirondack’s Austin Trombley (132), Beekmantown’s Brandon Defayette (195) and AuSable Valley’s Kenny Rivers (285).
