ALBANY — All in all, it turned out to be a pretty good day for Section VII during Friday’s first day of action in the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships at the Albany Times-Union Center.
Peru’s Nick Forget (126) and Troy Seymour (170), along with Beekmantown’s Gage Bourdeau (182), advanced to today’s semifinals by each winning two matches.
Reaching the semifinals guarantees placing in the state event and finishing no worst than sixth.
Section VII, with several wrestlers making their first trip to the states, had its 15 matmen go a combined 18-21 on the day.
“We did pretty well — surprisingly well,” Peru co-coach Mike Hogan said. “We ended up with three in the semifinals and all our kids from Section VII competed hard. It was a pretty good day for the section.
“We had seven wrestlers win their first matches of the day.”
Forget began the day with a pin of the PSAL’s Daniel Padulo in 38 seconds and then recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over Section VI’s Brandon Muntz in the quarterfinals.
“I’m pretty happy,” Forget said. “The second match was a close one. I talked to some kids who had wrestled him and they said I could beat him. He was scrappy.
“I reversed him in the second period to get the lead and then had a point awarded to him. But I rode him out.”
Forget will get Section IV’s William Koll in today’s semifinals.
“He’s the top seed, but I’m confident,” Forget said.
Seymour, meanwhile, recorded a 13-1 decision over Section V’s Collin Fox in the opening round and then a 5-2 win over Section IV’s Zack Buckley in the quarterfinals.
“I beat the first guy up pretty good,” Seymour said. “When I have a big lead like that, I make sure I don’t make a mistake in the third period.
“I was able to get a couple of takedowns in my second match and I’m pretty happy with how the day went. I get a kid from the city (Section XI’s Adis Radoncic) in the semifinals.”
Seymour, who placed fourth at the state a year ago, is seeded second at 170.
Bourdeau posted a 6-3 victory over Section VI’s Tyler Veno in the first round and followed that up with a 10-2 decision over Section IV’s Mike Beers in the quarterfinals.
“Both kids I wrestled today have been here before and I was able to pick it up,” Bourdeau said. “In my second match, it was more emotional for sure. The crowd was into it.”
Bourdeau draws the top seed, Section III’s Zack Zupan, in today’s semifinals.
“I believe in myself and I’m looking forward to wrestling him,” Bourdeau said.
“Gage wrestled very well,” Beekmantown coach Lenny Gadway said. “We were very happy with him and we’re hoping for a good outing on Saturday.
“And Zach Myers also wrestled well for us. He lost to the top seed, 6-2, and then had the lead in the third period of his second match. Both he and Gage are great kids and they represented the section well.”
In addition to the three in the semifinals, three other Section VII matmen are still alive in double-elimination event.
Saranac’s Austin LaTulip (132) went 2-1 on the day, with his lone loss being a tough 3-2 decision to Section VI’s Tyler Cassidy in his second match.
Peru’s Jordan Bushey (138) also went 2-1, winning his first and third matches, while losing to second-seeded Connor Lapresi of Section IV.
Northern Adirondack’s Matt Lashway (195) dropped his first match, but came back to win his next two.
Section VII wrestlers who went 1-2 on the day and were eliminated included Saranac’s Johnny Devins (99), Northern Adirondack’s Austin Trombley (106), Peru’s Kyler Agoney (113), Peru’s Ethan Feazelle (120), Saranac’s Codie Gillette (145) and Saranac’s James Black (160).
Gillette, after winning his first match, lost a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime decision to Section IV’s Frank Garcia, who was seeded second at 145, in the quarterfinals and then lost in the wrestlebacks.
Beekmantown’s Myers (152), Peru’s Luke McKee (220) and Northern Adirondack’s Scott Guerin (285) were unable to win a match and finished 0-2 while being eliminated.
